TRANSPORTATION

Welcome to the first subway Shaw
Conference, although you might find yourself on a bus or in a cab occasionally
as well.
Ø To begin with, you can go all the way from the Reagan National Airport to the conference
hotel, the Hilton Rockville,
which is situated just off the Twinbrook Metro Red Line station (probably over
an hour to do that, costing about $5).
At the airport you would take either the Yellow or Blue Line to Metro
Center or Gallery Place and then transfer to the Red Line to complete the
journey to the hotel. And back on the
way out. The transfers are relatively
easy. [The hotel is at 1750 Rockville
Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852
301-468-1100, Fax:
301-468-0163, just north of the Montrose-Randolph Hills intersection on
Wisconsin Ave.-Rockville Pike.] The
subway does not go all the way out to Dulles Airport, however, so you’d need to take a
taxi or some other means of transportation to get to the nearest subway
station.
Ø And on the roughly U-shaped Red Line is also located the three other
principal stops of the conference, The Irish Embassy a bit northwest of the Dupont Circle stop,
The Catholic University of America at the Brookland-CUA stop and Clyde’s of Gallery
Place on the Gallery
Place-Chinatown stop (with the Washington Stage Guild Theater within
walking distance from Clyde’s). Clyde’s is near the corner of 7th St. & G St., and the Stage Guild is at 9th St.
between E & Fth.
Ø It’s only because you sometimes have long waits for trains late at night
that chartered buses
will be used then to ferry you back to the hotel after the play performances
Friday and Saturday evenings (although you’re welcome to take your chances on
the Metro, if you like). A bus will
also be available to take you from the final session at CUA on Friday afternoon
to Clyde’s, although, again, you could take the Metro instead, getting off at
Gallery Place.
Ø But otherwise, summing
up the subway usage, you’ll probably take the Metro from the Hilton
Rockville to the Irish Embassy on Thursday night, Oct. 15, and then back, and
to the Catholic University campus (Pryzbyla Center) on Friday and Saturday
mornings, Oct. 16-17. See “Maps & Directions.” Also see the General Schedule.
Ø And of course there are taxis available at all hours, if you prefer to ride that way,
and cars for rent all over the place (there’s an Enterprise Leasing near the
Hotel Rockville). You might be able to
pick up a taxi on the street when you’re downtown, but, just in case, taxi #s
to call (as well as airport car service) are to be found at http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=search&searchtype=search&country=US&cat=Taxis&city=Washington&state=DC&zipcode&cid

Below is the Metro map, with red arrows pointing to the
three principal conference stops, the Hotel Rockville at the Twinbrook
Station, Dupont Circle for the walk to the Irish Embassy, and Catholic
University at the Brookland-CUA Station.
There’s a thinner red arrow pointing to the Gallery Place-Chinatown
Station where you would get off for Clyde’s and the Washington Stage Guild
Theatre:

You can make yourself more familiar with the D.C. subway system by going
to http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm
and clicking on the various links. It’s
a relatively clean and efficient system, and the only “heads up” you might need
is to the fact this system does not operate like the New York system, for here
you need to run your ticket through the turnstile mechanism in order to
exit. There are machines at every
station where you can purchase tickets with a credit card, and it’s advisable
to get at least a $20 ticket (more if you start at the airport). You need that ticket to enter and exit the
subway. And you can’t lend your ticket
to someone else. Each person needs his/her own
ticket.
If you take the 3 buses that have
been chartered for the conference, in the afternoon on Saturday to Clyde’s and
late at night on the evenings of Friday and Saturday after the plays, then your
principal use of the Metro subway will be to get to and from the Irish Embassy
reception on Thursday evening (get off at Dupont Circle and walk northwest to the Irish Embassy at 2234
Massachusetts Ave. NW, across from Sheridan Circle) and to get to
Catholic University on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Dupont Circle area and the way to the Irish Embassy, just click on http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=2234+Massachusetts+Ave+NW+Washington,+DC+20008&fb=1&geocode=2466619205359480762,38.911397,-77.049236&cd=1&z=16&g=2234+Massachusetts+Ave+NW+Washington,+DC+20008&iwloc=addr
"A
movement which is confined to philosophers and honest men can never exercise any
real political influence: there are too few of them. Until a movement
shews itself capable of spreading among brigands, it can never hope for a
political majority."
