FROM AIRPORT TO HOTEL

The two main airports in the D.C. area are of course Reagan National and Dulles Airport.   From Dulles you can take buses or taxis, but there is no subway going directly to or from it.  Of course you could have a taxi take you to the nearest subway station or to Rosslyn station and proceed from there to the Hilton Rockville Hotel on the Rockville Pike, although you would need transfers to accomplish that. It’s much easier to get from Reagan National Airport to the Hilton Rockville.  Just follow the signs in the airport to the subway, and soon you’ll find yourself on a station platform that looks like this and offers a choice, Blue Line or Yellow Line:

You could take either the Blue Line to Metro Center and transfer there to the Red Line to Shady Grove or take the Yellow Line to Gallery Place/Chinatown and transfer there to the Red Line to Shady Grove.  But of course you would get off before you get to Shady Grove, at the Twinbrook Station, right next to the hotel (See “Accommodations” for hotel information).  The Red Line is the key to the entire conference, as explained below.

METRO SUBWAY MAP

Or go to http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

At this conference, with the exception of coming from the airport to the hotel, you might use nothing but the Metro Red Line (roughly U-shaped) to get to all events, but as the events on Friday and Saturday night get out so late, when the Metro is not always reliable, chartered buses will be provided to take you back to the Hilton Rockville Hotel.  Note that the three straight red arrows below point to the three stations on the Red Line that you need to travel to and between, Twinbrook (where the Hotel Rockville is) at the top left, Dupont Circle (where you exit to attend the reception at the Irish Embassy on Massachusetts Ave. NW on Thursday night), and Brookland-CUA to the right, where the daily sessions of the conference on Friday and Saturday will be held.   Two other stations that you might encounter are Metro Center and Gallery Place Chinatown (see white two-headed arrow), either of which might be your transfer point to the Red Line if you come in from National Regan Airport on the Blue or Yellow Lines.   And, if you choose not to take the chartered bus back to the hotel on Friday night after the play at the Washington Stage Guild Theater (9th St. between E & Fth), you might take your chances with the Metro by getting on at either of those stations.   The Friday night buffet at Clyde’s of Gallery Place (near the corner of 7th St. & G St.) is accessed by the Metro at, of course, the Gallery Place Chinatown, which you could travel to from Brookland-CUA if you don’t want to take the chartered bus.  If you don’t take the chartered buses when they’re available to you, or if you’re late getting to them, you can always try the Metro or a cab, but then you’re on your own.

CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CAMPUS MAP

Or go to http://welcome.cua.edu/ for a version with an index of buildings.

The buildings that are involved in the Shaw Conference are lined up on a roughly northwest diagonal from the Brookland-CUA Metro station near the bottom right corner to the Pryzbyla Center near the middle and the Hartke Theater nearer to the top left.   Most of your time will be spent at the Pryzbyla, but a Shaw play will be available at the Hartke Theater on Saturday night.

PRYZBYLA CENTER MAP

The daily sessions on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 & 17, of the 2009 DC Shaw Conference will be held on the campus of The Catholic University of America in their student center, called the Pryzbyla University Center, on the third floor in the red and green areas in the building map below.  Although the Food Court on the second floor (yellow area) will be available to conference registrants on Friday, as well as the Student Restaurant (yellow area) and a Starbucks on the third floor, only the Starbucks and the Student Restaurant will be open on Saturday.

If coming from the Metro Station, you could enter Pryzbyla from the east (steps to climb) or or from the west (see campus map above), depending on which route you took.   The west door is the one you would take out to get to the Hartke Theater Building, which is on an upward northwest diagonal from Pryzbyla to the west side of the campus.
