Nothing like a good pipe before beddy byes.

The ISS has contracted with the Hilton Rockville Hotel (pictured below) for a limited number of rooms, which will go on a first come, first served basis.   The contracted rate is $109 plus tax, which you will find a bargain among hotels of this quality in Washington, D.C.   That will be the rate specified if you book online with a credit card at http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/IADMRHF-ISS-20091015/index.jhtml, but if you call to reserve, at 301-468-1100, you may have to insist on the conference rate.   Please note that if you ask for some rate other than the conference rate (such as the AAA or AARP or government/military or Advanced Purchase {non-refundable} rates), your reservation will not count toward satisfying the group block minimum that the ISS is liable for.   Also, please use a credit card and not a debit card if you do not want the charge to appear on your card until the actual time of the conference.

This hotel is conveniently located right opposite the Twinbrook Metro subway station on the Red Line, and please note that it takes at least an hour on the Red Line (despite no transfers) to get from the hotel to the campus of The Catholic University of America (Brookland-CUA station), where the daily sessions on Friday and Saturday will be held at the Pryzbyla Center.   As the Metro is not always reliable late at night, chartered buses will take conference participants home from the two Shaw productions scheduled for the conference on Friday and Saturday nights, after buffet banquets.  [If you’re interested in sharing a room, please contact ISS president Richard Dietrich at dietrich@cas.usf.edu, who will advertise your request to share a room (with two queen-sized beds) with other conference participants.]

The Hilton Rockville Hotel is at 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852, just north of the Montrose-Randolph Hills intersection on the Rockville Pike (which starts out in Georgetown as Wisconsin Ave).]   Their phone numbers: 301-468-1100, Fax: 301-468-0163.  Note that they have a secure parking lot, which costs $12 a day, with unlimited in and out privileges.

Of course other accommodations are possible, and you may be able to find cheaper arrangements, for example, at motels east of the campus of the University of Maryland, providing you don’t mind additional hassle with transportation.  From such motels you would have to arrange to take a small motel bus to a Metro station [Greenbelt], and then take the Green Line to Ft. Totten and transfer there to the Red Line in order to get to the CUA campus.  Having a car might of course alleviate some of the Metro transfer hassles, since as the crow flies the distance between College Park and CUA is not that great, but you might encounter traffic problems.   One caveat: most of these motels do not have restaurants, although they may provide some sort of breakfast.

For a list of College Park motels on Baltimore Ave., see http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4SKPB_enUS258US259&q=motels+in+College+Park%2c++MD.

There are other relatively inexpensive hotels around town, even in the downtown area, but they tend to be a bit run down or Spartan or in questionable neighborhoods or require a longer walk from the Metro to the hotel. Try http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=t&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4SKPB_ enUS258US259&q=Cheap+Hotels+in+downtown+D%2eC%2e, but their definition of “cheap” may not be yours.

There would probably be no problem in finding more expensive arrangements, especially in the downtown area between the Convention Center and Union Station where there are plenty of hotels, and you need only search for D.C. hotels online to find a long list.  Expect upwards of $200 + taxes a night at most good hotels.

Sometimes these more expensive hotels offer bargain rates at the last minute, especially online, and this is simply a matter of being vigilant and checking daily.   See, for example, the Jurys Washington Hotel near Dupont Circle at http://washingtondchotels.jurysdoyle.com/jurys_washingtondc.   We would have made this the conference hotel if they would have offered us a conference rate similar to their last-minute bargain rates.
