RONALD BRYDEN SCHOLARSHIPS & ISS TRAVEL GRANTS,

OFFERED IN TANDEM IN CONJUNCTION WITH

THE ANNUAL SUMMER SHAW SYMPOSIUM AT THE SHAW FESTIVAL

  Downloadable or Printable Application

TOP

The Shaw Festival and the International Shaw Society normally offer two scholarships/grants to young scholars to attend the Annual Shaw Symposium at Niagara-on the-Lake, Ontario, this year from August 15 through August 17, 2019.  These scholarships/grants, to begin with, will pay the registration fee of $150 (or $95 for students), which includes a ticket to each of the three Shaw plays.  In addition, the Shaw Festival's Ronald Bryden Scholarships that accompany two of the ISS Travel Grants will provide free accommodation during the three days and two nights of the Symposium.  But let us know if you need accommodations for a third night.  The Bryden Scholarships commemorate the late Ronald Bryden (1927-2004), long-time Literary Adviser to The Shaw and a founding member of the ISS.  The ISS Travel Grants may also help with transportation expenses (see application form below).   As Bryden Scholarships are limited in number, it is possible that you might get an ISS Travel Grant alone.

ELIGIBILITY

Generally, any “emerging scholar” may apply, whether student or faculty or independent scholar, but new applicants will be given some preference over those who have had a scholarship/grant before.  Students should be registered at a recognized degree-granting institution.  Preference will be given to applicants who are also submitting a proposal for a paper to be given at the 2018 Summer Shaw Symposium.

APPLICATION for Bryden Scholarship and/or ISS Travel Grant

Applicants for the scholarship/grant should send, all in one document and in this order, a covering letter, an application form, an abstract for a proposed paper, and a current c.v. (see below) to the selection committee by attachment to an email to Professor Lawrence Switzky at lawrenceswitzky@gmail.com. Proposals for papers should go to the same address. See below for application form.

DEADLINES:

·    Deadline for submitting a 300-500 word abstract for a paper is May 1, 2019.

·    Deadline for grant/scholarship applications accompanied by an abstract for a paper is May 1, 2019.

·    Candidates will be notified no later than May 15, 2019 regarding the acceptance of their paper proposal or a grant/scholarship application combined with a paper proposal.

ISS MEMBERSHIP: You need not be a member of the ISS to apply for this grant/scholarship.  Non-members who receive a scholarship/grant will be given a free membership to the ISS for 2019-2020.
