SYMPOSIUM
PROGRAM:
The symposium will convene from 5:00 to 6:00 on Friday afternoon,
July 27, at the Shaw Festival Theater for a short welcome and social
gathering (wine & cheese), allowing time for participants to have
dinner on their own and then attend Shaw’s The
Millionairess at the Court House Theatre at 8:00 pm. Saturday, July 28, will be occupied with
speakers and discussions in the morning, followed by seeing Shaw’s Misalliance at 2:00 pm in the Royal George Theatre. On Sunday, July 29, there will be morning
and afternoon sessions of speakers and discussions, with a picnic lunch on
the Festival patio around noon, concluding around 4:00 with a brief meeting
of the International Shaw Society.
There will be at least one session on staging Shaw with
actors/directors/designers from the Shaw Festival on either Saturday or
Sunday or perhaps on both days. An
extra play or two could be booked on Saturday and Sunday evenings (see

SYMPOSIUM COSTS AND
REGISTRATION:
TO REGISTER for the Shaw Symposium, either as a presenter or not, please contact
the Shaw Festival Box Office at 1-800-511-7429 and ask for “Group
Sales.” Shaw Festival Members can register from November 5 on (see below for qualifications of that), but Festival non-members must
wait until January 14 for in person and phone orders. Registration
is $260 Canadian per participant ($240 Canadian for ISS members). This registration price includes the wine
& cheese reception on Friday, sessions both Saturday and Sunday, a
picnic lunch on Sunday, and a Gold Tier seat for The Millionairess on Friday night and for Misalliance on Saturday afternoon. The ISS discount of $20 is available to
anyone who is a member of the society (see below). Seating charts are

BOOKING EXTRA PLAYS:
The only plays included in the registration price are the two Shaw
plays, on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, one ticket for each per
registration. Additional tickets for
Shaw performances (and other plays) can be purchased by phoning the Box
Office at 1-800-511-7429 and asking for “Group Sales” or by ordering online
at http://www.shawfest.com. You can order extra tickets for the Shaw
plays or tickets for other plays when you are registering for the Shaw
Symposium, providing that you wait until January 14, 2012, to register and
order if you’re not a member of the Shaw Festival. Members of the Festival may order extra
tickets according to the following membership

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS:
Participants are responsible
for arranging their own travel and accommodation. See the Shaw
Festival website for links under “Plan Your Visit” that will assist: www.shawfest.com.
There are lots of B&Bs and hotels to choose from. Passports are
needed on visits to Canada.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHAW SOCIETY:
You need not be a member of the International Shaw Society to attend or
participate in the Shaw Symposium (typically, about half are not members,
in fact), but, if you wish to be eligible for the discount mentioned above,
as well as other ISS discounts, information about membership is available
at www.shawsociety.org (or go
directly to http://www.shawsociety.org/2012-Membership-Form-&-Benefits.htm). A meeting of the ISS will be held at the
Symposium, and non-members are welcome to attend as prospective
members.

SUBMIT PROPOSALS: Proposals for
papers and panel discussion topics (focused as much as possible on Misalliance and The Millionairess, or on comparisons between them and other
plays or between Shaw and other playwrights in the Festival repertory)
should be sent to Dr. Brad Kent, preferably as an attachment to an
email (to Brad.Kent@lit.ulaval.ca), or by mail to Professor Brad
Kent, Département des littératures, Pavillon Charles De Koninck, bureau 3307, Université
Laval, Québec, QC G1V 0A6, CANADA . Include a 300-500
word abstract. Those applying for
scholarships/grants should submit additional information (see below). Deadline is May 1, 2012.

The
Shaw Festival and the International Shaw Society are offering two
scholarships/grants to young scholars to attend the Ninth Annual Shaw
Symposium at Niagara-on the-Lake, Ontario, from July 27 through July 29,
2012. These scholarships/grants, to
begin with, will pay the registration fee of $240 (which includes a ticket
to each of the two Shaw plays). In
addition, the Shaw Festival's Ronald Bryden Scholarships that accompany the
ISS Travel Grants will provide free accommodation during the three days of
the Symposium. The Bryden
Scholarships commemorate the late Ronald Bryden (1927-2004), long-time
Literary Adviser to The Shaw and a founding member of the ISS. The ISS Travel Grants may also help with
transportation expenses (see application form below).

ELIGIBILITY
Generally,
any “emerging scholar” may apply, whether student or faculty or
independent, but new applicants will be given some preference over those
who have had a scholarship/grant before.
Students should be registered at a recognized degree-granting
institution. Preference will be
given to applicants who are also submitting a proposal for a paper to be
given at the 2012 Summer Shaw Symposium.

Applicants
for the scholarship/grant should send, all in one document and in this
order, a covering letter, an application form, an abstract for a
proposed paper, and a current c.v. (see below) to the selection committee

will be notified no later than May 15, 2012 regarding the acceptance of their

ISS MEMBERSHIP: You need not be a member of the
ISS to apply for this grant/scholarship.
Non-members who receive a scholarship/grant will be given a free
membership to the ISS for 2013.
