SYMPOSIUM
PROGRAM:
The symposium will convene from 5:00 to 6:00 on Friday afternoon,
July 23, at the Shaw Festival for a short welcome and social gathering
(wine & cheese), allowing time for participants to have dinner either
on their own or at a designated restaurant as a group and then attend The Doctor’s Dilemma at the Festival
Theatre at 8:00 pm. Saturday, July
24, will be occupied with speakers and panel discussions in the morning and
afternoon, with a picnic lunch on the Festival patio in between, and seeing
John Bull’s Other Island at 8:00
pm in the Court House Theatre. On
Sunday, July 25, there will be a session of speakers in the morning,
concluding with a brief meeting of the International Shaw Society. There will be at least one session on
staging Shaw with actors/directors/designers from the Shaw Festival on
either Saturday or Sunday or perhaps on both days. An extra play or two could be booked on
Sunday afternoon and evening. To see

SYMPOSIUM COSTS AND
REGISTRATION:
TO REGISTER for the Shaw Symposium, either as a presenter or not,
please contact the Shaw Festival Box Office at 1-800-511-7429, extension
1302. Festival Members can order now, but non-members must wait until
January 16. For updating of the
Symposium program and other details, visit the ISS website at http://www.shawsociety.org/. A price list is posted at http://www.shawfest.com/Home/Shaw-Enriched/Shaw-Symposium.
Registration is $260 Canadian per participant ($235 Canadian for ISS
members) for Platinum Tier seats in the Festival Theatre and Gold Tier
seats in the Court House Theatre, or, for Red Tier seats in the Festival
and Blue Tier Seats in the Court House, $225 per participant ($200 for ISS
members). A tax may be added on to
this (it’s being debated in the legislature). This includes the wine & cheese reception
on Friday, sessions both Saturday and Sunday, a picnic lunch on Saturday,
and a Platinum or Gold or Red or
Blue seat (your choice) for The Doctor’s Dilemma on Friday night and for
John Bull’s Other Island on Saturday night. The ISS discount is available to anyone
who is a member of the society (see

BOOKING EXTRA PLAYS:
The only plays included in the registration price are the two Shaw
plays, on Friday and Saturday nights.
Additional tickets for Shaw performances (and other plays) can be
purchased by phoning the Box Office at 1-800-511-7429 or ordering online at
www.shawfest.com. You can order
extra tickets for the Shaw plays or tickets for other plays when you are
registering for the Shaw Symposium.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS:
Participants are responsible for arranging their
own travel and accommodation. See the Shaw Festival website for links
under “Plan Your Visit” that will assist: www.shawfest.com. Passports are needed on visits to
Canada.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHAW SOCIETY:
You need not be a member of the International Shaw Society to attend
or participate in the Shaw Symposium (typically, about half are not
members, in fact), but, if you wish to be eligible for the discount mentioned
above, as well as other discounts, information about membership is
available at http://www.shawsociety.org/
(or go directly to http://www.shawsociety.org/2009-Membership-Form-&-Benefits.htm). A meeting of the ISS will be held at the
Symposium, and non-members are welcome to attend as prospective
members.

papers and panel discussion topics (focused as much as possible on The Doctor’s Dilemma and John Bull’s Other Island, or on
comparisons between them and other plays in the Festival repertory) should

abstract. Those applying for

The Shaw
Festival and the International Shaw Society are offering up to three
scholarships/grants to young scholars to attend the Seventh Annual Shaw
Symposium at Niagara-on the-Lake, Ontario, from July 23 through July 25,
2010. These scholarships/grants, to begin
with, will pay the registration fee of $200 (which includes an A+ ticket to
each of the two Shaw plays). In
addition, the Shaw Festival's Ronald Bryden Scholarships will provide free
accommodation during the three days of the Symposium. The Bryden Scholarships
commemorate the late Ronald Bryden (1927-2004), long-time Literary Adviser
to The Shaw and a founding member of the ISS. The ISS Travel Grants may also help with
transportation expenses (see application form below).

ELIGIBILITY
Generally,
any young scholar 40 or under may apply, whether student or faculty or
independent. Students should be
registered at a recognized degree-granting institution. Preference will be given to applicants
who are also submitting a proposal for a paper to be given at the 2010
Summer Shaw Symposium.

APPLICATION
Applicants
for the scholarship/grant should send, all in one document and in this
order, a covering letter, an application form, an abstract, and a
current c.v. (see below) to the selection committee by attachment to an
email to Professor Leonard Conolly at lconolly@trentu.ca or by
mail to Dr. Conolly at the Department of English, Trent University,
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.
Proposals for papers should go to the same addresses.

DEADLINES:
· Deadline
for submitting a 300-500 word abstract for a paper is April 15, 2010.

for grant/scholarship applications is also April 15, 2010.
· Candidates
will be notified no later than May 15, 2010 regarding the acceptance of
their paper proposal and grant/scholarship application.

ISS MEMBERSHIP: You need not be a member of the
ISS to apply for this grant/scholarship.
Non-members who receive a scholarship/grant will be given a free
membership to the ISS for 2010 & 2011.
