C A L L F O R
P A P E R S You Are Invited to THE SIXTH ANNUAL SHAW SYMPOSIUM at The Shaw Festival 24-25-26 July 2009 |
|
Sponsored by the Academy of the Shaw Festival and the
International Shaw Society
Scholars and devotees of
Shaw will gather to hear academic papers and
talks from actors and/or
directors, participate in discussions,
and see both The Devil’s Disciple and In
Good King Charles’s Golden Days.
The symposium will convene late on Friday afternoon, July 24,
at the Shaw Festival for a short welcome and social gathering, allowing time
for participants to have dinner either on their own or at a designated
restaurant as a group and attend The
Devil’s Disciple at the Festival Theatre at 8:00. Saturday, July 25, will be occupied with
papers and panel discussions in the morning and seeing In Good King Charles’s Golden Day at 2:00 in the Royal George
Theatre. An extra play could be booked
that evening, either Born Yesterday
or Sunday in the Park with George. On Sunday, July 26, there will be a session
of papers in the morning, a discussion on staging Shaw with actors and/or
directors from the Shaw Festival, a picnic lunch, and then, in the afternoon,
more paper and discussion sessions, concluding with a brief meeting of the
International Shaw Society in the late afternoon. You could book an extra play in the evening,
with Albertine in Five Times added to
Born Yesterday or Sunday in the Park with George as
options. To see the Playbill for the
entire 2009 season, go to www.shawfest.com/?docid=Playbill.
All symposium sessions will be held
at Shaw Festival venues, details to be provided later. It is hoped that proposals for papers and
panel topics will be directed towards provoking lively discussion, for which ample
time will be allowed. Submissions from
younger scholars are particularly encouraged.
PROPOSALS for papers and
discussion topics (focused as much as possible on The Devil’s Disciple and In
Good King Charles’s Golden Day, or on comparisons between them and other
plays in the Festival repertory) should be sent to Dr. Leonard Conolly,
preferably as an attachment to an email (lconolly@trentu.ca), or by mail to
Professor Leonard Conolly, Department of English,
