Sponsored by the Academy of the Shaw Festival and the International Shaw Society

Scholars and devotees of Shaw will gather to hear academic papers and

talks from actors and/or directors, participate in discussions,

and see both Mrs. Warren’s Profession  and Getting Married.

The symposium will convene late on Friday afternoon, July 25, at the Shaw Festival for a short welcome and social gathering, allowing time for participants to have dinner on their own and attend Getting Married at the Royal George Theatre later that evening.  Saturday, July 26, will be occupied with papers and panel discussions in the morning, with a picnic lunch around noon, allowing time for the scheduling of a matinee, having dinner, and seeing Mrs. Warren’s Profession at 8:00 in the Festival Theatre.  On Sunday, July 27, there will be a session of papers in the morning, a discussion on staging Shaw with actors and/or directors from the Shaw Festival, and lunch on one’s own, and then, in the afternoon, more paper sessions, concluding with a brief meeting of the International Shaw Society in the late afternoon.

All symposium sessions will be held at Shaw Festival venues, details to be provided later.  It is hoped that proposals for papers and panel topics will be directed towards provoking lively discussion, for which ample time will be allowed.  Submissions from younger scholars are particularly encouraged.

PROPOSALS for papers and panel topics (focused as much as possible on Getting Married and Mrs. Warren’s Profession) should be sent to Dr. Leonard Conolly, preferably as an attachment to an email (lconolly@trentu.ca), or by mail to Professor Leonard Conolly, Department of English, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.  Include a 300-500 word abstract.  Those applying for scholarships or grants should submit additional information (see below).   Deadline is April 15, 2008.

TO REGISTER for the Shaw Symposium, either as a presenter or not, please contact the Shaw Festival Box Office at 1-800-511-7429.  For updating of the schedule and other details, visit the ISS website at www.shawsociety.org.  Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation.  See the Shaw Festival website for links: www.shawfest.com/.

SYMPOSIUM PRICE LIST:

Registration is $215 Canadian per participant ($199 Canadian for ISS members), and it includes the reception on Friday, sessions both Saturday and Sunday, a picnic lunch on Saturday, and an A+ ticket for Getting Married on Friday night and for Mrs. Warrens Profession on Saturday night.  Additional tickets for Shaw performances can be purchased by phoning the Box Office at 1-800-511-7429 or ordering online at www.shawfest.com/.  You could probably squeeze a second play in on Saturday (a matinee) and Sunday (in the evening), if you wish, but scheduling needs may force us to use Saturday afternoon for Symposium activities (check with dietrich@cas.usf.edu on that).

ISS Membership: You need not be a member of the International Shaw Society to attend or participate in the Shaw Symposium (about half are not members, in fact), but information about membership is available at www.shawsociety.org, if you wish to be eligible for the discount mentioned above, as well as other discounts.  A meeting of the ISS will be held at the Symposium, and non-members are welcome to attend as prospective members.
