Scholars and devotees of
Shaw will gather to hear academic papers and
talks from actors and/or directors, participate in
discussions,
and see both Mrs.
Warren’s Profession and Getting Married.
The symposium will convene late on Friday afternoon, July 25,
at the Shaw Festival for a short welcome and social gathering, allowing time
for participants to have dinner on their own and attend Getting Married at the
All symposium sessions will be held
at Shaw Festival venues, details to be provided later. It is hoped that proposals for papers and
panel topics will be directed towards provoking lively discussion, for which
ample time will be allowed. Submissions
from younger scholars are particularly encouraged.

panel topics (focused as much as possible on Getting Married and Mrs.
Warren’s Profession) should be sent to Dr. Leonard Conolly, preferably as

TO REGISTER for the Shaw Symposium, either as a presenter or
not, please contact the Shaw Festival Box Office at 1-800-511-7429, beginning
on November 10. 2008. For updating of the schedule

SYMPOSIUM
PRICE LIST:
Registration is $215
Canadian per participant ($199 Canadian for ISS
members), and it includes the reception on Friday, sessions both
Saturday and Sunday, a picnic lunch on Saturday, and an A+ ticket for Getting
Married on Friday night and for Mrs. Warrens Profession on Saturday
night. Additional tickets for Shaw performances can be purchased
by phoning the Box Office at 1-800-511-7429 or ordering online at www.shawfest.com. You
could probably squeeze a second play in on Saturday (a matinee) and Sunday (in
the evening), if you wish, but scheduling needs may force us to use Saturday
afternoon for Symposium activities (check with dietrich@cas.usf.edu on that).
ISS Membership: You need not be a member of the International Shaw Society to attend or
participate in the Shaw Symposium (about half are not members, in fact), but
information about membership is available at www.shawsociety.org, if you wish to be eligible for the discount mentioned above,
as well as other discounts. A
meeting of the ISS will be held at the Symposium, and non-members are welcome
to attend as prospective members.

TRAVEL GRANTS,
OFFERED IN TANDEM IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THE ANNUAL SHAW SYMPOSIUM AT THE SHAW FESTIVAL
The Shaw Festival and the
International Shaw Society are offering up to five scholarships/grants to young
scholars to attend the Fourth Annual Shaw Symposium at Niagara-on the-Lake,
ELIGIBILITY
Generally, any young scholar 40 or
under may apply, whether student or faculty or independent. Students should be registered at a recognized
degree-granting institution. Preference
will be given to applicants who are also submitting a proposal for a paper to
be given at the 2008 Shaw Symposium.
APPLICATION
Applicants for the scholarship/grant
should send, all in one document and in
this order, a covering letter, an application form, an abstract, and a current c.v.
(see below) to the selection committee by attachment to an email to Professor
Leonard Conolly at lconolly@trentu.ca
or by mail to Dr.
Conolly at the Department of English,
DEADLINES:
· Deadline for submitting a 300-500 word abstract for a paper is April 15,
2008.
· Deadline for grant/scholarship applications is also April 15, 2008.
· Candidates will be notified no later than May 15, 2008 regarding the
acceptance of their paper proposal and grant/scholarship application.
ISS MEMBERSHIP: You need not be a member of the ISS to apply for this
grant/scholarship. Non-members who
receive a scholarship/grant will be given a free membership to the ISS for the
balance of the year.
