ISS TRAVEL GRANTS & BRYDEN SCHOLARSHIPS
April 1, 2018 Deadline (see below)
1.) GENERAL INTRODUCTION:
As one of the principal goals of the International Shaw Society is to encourage younger generations to experience the delights and enlightenment of reading and seeing Shaw’s works and participating in the discussion of them, the ISS offers a generous program of support for “emerging scholars” in the form of scholarships and travel grants, which are allied with particular events, such as symposia and conferences.
2.) TO CONTRIBUTE:
To contribute to the fund for grants and scholarships, include donations in your membership application or renewal. See the membership form at www.shawsociety.org/2018-membership.htm. If you give a minimum of $500, the grant the ISS gives with that can carry your name, if you wish.
3.) INTRODUCTION TO BRYDEN SCHOLARSHIPS & ISS TRAVEL GRANTS IN 2018:
For the 2018 Summer Symposium in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Bryden Scholarships are available and will pay for accommodation for the first two nights of the Symposium (but let us know if you need a third night); Travel Grants (maximum of $500) are available to assist “emerging scholars” in paying travel expenses not otherwise reimbursed. You can apply for both, and at least two Bryden Scholars will receive Travel Grants as well. You can apply for a Travel Grant without applying for a Bryden Scholarship. The deadline for applying for the Bryden/Travel Grant or Bryden alone is April 1, 2018. The deadline for applying for just a Travel Grant ($500 maximum) is also April 1, 2018.
The Bryden Scholarship is named after Professor Ronald Bryden, former Literary Adviser to the Shaw Festival, who was, at various times, the dramaturge to Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, one of England’s leading drama critics, and the head of the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama at the University of Toronto. A collection of his essays entitled Shaw and his Contemporaries has been published by the Shaw Festival.
For the 2018 Summer Symposium (July 27-28-29) in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, use the same form (at the bottom) for your application for an ISS Travel Grant and/or a Bryden Scholarship.
More specifically, the Bryden Scholarship will provide free accommodation for two nights (possibly three, if requested), free registration for the conference, and free tickets for the three Shaw plays. The ISS Travel Grant, normally a maximum of $500 but those coming from overseas may ask for more, contributes toward paying travel and registration expenses that are not reimbursed. But note that a grant winner would be responsible for arranging and paying for accommodations and most meals. If you apply for and are awarded both a Bryden Scholarship and a Travel Grant, that means that almost everything would be paid for except most meals and local transportation.
Acceptance of the Travel Grant and/or Bryden Scholarship assumes that you will attend the entire conference and present a paper or appear on a panel as scheduled, July 27-28-29, 2018.
It’s highly recommend that you read first the details of the Symposium as found at www.shawsociety.org/SummerSymposium-2018.htm. Send questions to the ISS President Michael O’Hara at firstname.lastname@example.org or, for questions about paper proposals, to Professor Lawrence Switzky at email@example.com.
4a.) APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
2018 Deadline for applications is April 1 for Bryden Scholarships and/or Travel Grants. Follow the instructions below. Send a brief letter introducing yourself (if unknown to the committee), a 300-500-word abstract of your paper presentation (use the longer if unknown to the committee), your application for a Bryden Scholarship and/or Travel Grant, and a c.v., all in one file and in that order, addressed to Professor Lawrence Switzky at firstname.lastname@example.org, with a copy to ISS President Michael O’Hara at email@example.com. Title your application in this way: Your Last Name-Short Title of Proposed Presentation.
