APPLYING FOR TRAVEL GRANTS FOR

THE D.C. SHAW CONFERENCE

OF OCTOBER 15-18, 2009

(You may skip directly to a Downloadable or Printable Application)

The International Shaw Society is offering up to ten travel grants of up to $500 each to young scholars (40 and under) to help defray unreimbursed expenses involved in attending the Shaw Conference in Washington, D.C. on October 15-18, 2009.  These grants, to begin with, will pay the conference registration fee.

The registration fee covers much of your cost: it includes the welcome reception at the Irish Embassy on Thursday evening, all sessions at CUA’s Pryzbyla Center on Friday and Saturday, continental breakfasts there, refreshments during the day, buffet banquets on Friday & Saturday nights, tickets to two Shaw productions, and chartered bus transportation back to the conference hotel after the plays. For possible assistance in meeting other, unreimbursed conference expenses as well (hotel, flight, etc.), please explain your need for additional funding below.  Whatever the grant (up to $500 total), you are expected to attend the entire conference and, if scheduled, to deliver a paper or participate on a panel.  Send application below to committee chair Professor Leonard Conolly, preferably as an email attachment (lconolly@trentu.ca), but otherwise by mail to Professor Leonard Conolly, Department of English, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.  Please copy ISS president Richard Dietrich at dietrich@cas.usf.edu on all submissions.   See www.shawsociety.org/DC-Shaw-Conference.htm for conference details, including the rate on the conference hotel (a special rate is available for the conference hotel, the Hilton Rockville, where an ISS business meeting will be held on Sunday morning, Oct. 18).

ELIGIBILITY

Generally, any young scholar 40 or under may apply, whether student or faculty or independent.  Students should be registered at a recognized degree-granting institution.  Preference will be given to applicants who are also submitting a proposal for a paper to be presented at the conference.

APPLICATION

Applicants for the grant should send, all in one document and in this order, a covering letter, an application form, an abstract, and a current c.v. (see below) to the selection committee by attachment to an email to committee chair Professor Leonard Conolly at lconolly@trentu.ca or by mail to Dr. Conolly at the Department of English, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.  Proposals for papers should go to the same addresses.  Please copy ISS president R. F. Dietrich at dietrich@cas.usf.edu on all submissions.
